BIOGRAPHIE
Jean François Lafleur is the Site Manager of Le Morne Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Property, with 18 years of experience in cultural and natural heritage management. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Heritage Studies (First Class, First Division) and a Master of Arts in Heritage Management (Distinction) from the University of Mauritius. Additionally, he earned a Certificate in Protected Area Management from the Durrell Conservation Academy and has completed various specialized courses in heritage conservation. Mr. Lafleur has contributed to archaeological and oral history research, gaining expertise in managing tangible and intangible heritage, fostering community engagement, and developing strategic partnerships. His knowledge spans heritage impact assessments, museum management, biodiversity conservation, project planning, tourism management, risk mitigation, sustainable development, protected area governance, and site interpretation. He has co-authored several publications, including Slave Trade, Slavery, and the Politics of Heritage Representation in Africa: Examples from Kenya and Mauritius and The Non-Adult Cohort from Le Morne Cemetery, Mauritius: A Snapshot of Early Life and Death after Abolition, co-authored with Dr. K. Seetah and published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology. As a founding member of the African Site Managers Network, he actively contributes to heritage discourse. Additionally, as President of Caritas Chamarel, he is dedicated to social work and poverty alleviation in southwest Mauritius.
