BIOGRAPHIE

Fatma Twahir is the Principal Curator of Fort Jesus World Heritage site. The Fort houses a museum, is a heritage site and periodically used by the community and the corporate sector as a place of social gathering in the evenings and by the youth as a sports arena on the outside. The curator oversees the smooth running of this property keeping its multiple functions, balancing its variable attributes while safeguarding its integrity. Previously she was manager of the Mombasa Old Town Conservation Office, participating in controlling the development of the buffer zone of the World Heritage Property. As an architect within the department of Sites and Monuments, she has been involved in Rehabilitation and re-use of old colonial building and conversion into Slavery Museum, Shimoni, management and development control of Mama Ngina Heritage site, co-ordinated research, and proposed project development of a Malindi Cultural centre and also on ground water supply potential and risks for Lamu World Heritage Site. This led to the gazettement of the catchment (sand dunes) for their protection. Fatma holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and MSc in Environmental Engineering. She is a NEMA lead expert undertaking Environmental Impact Assessments and trained in Conservation of built heritage and Disaster risk management. She has been involved in training on Impact Assessment, Disaster Risk and Heritage Management both locally and regionally. She has also participated in Reactive monitoring missions within Africa. Fatma has been the president of the African Site Managers Network since 2022, leading site managers of World Heritage Sites in Africa towards contribution on management issues, capacity enabling and celebrating successes of local initiatives in overcoming challenges of safeguarding heritage for the future generation.
